Cold Storage Racking
Cold storage racking is purpose-designed pallet storage for chilled and frozen warehouses where every cubic metre of refrigerated air costs money to maintain. ApexBeam supplies drive-in, mobile, shuttle and 4-way shuttle systems rated for low-temperature operation, with steel grade and impact toughness selected for the operating temperature, delivered to cold-chain projects in 19+ countries.
Storage Challenges in Cold Storage
- Refrigeration cost scales with volume. Every unused cubic metre still consumes energy; wide aisles in conventional selective racking waste cooled space that high-density systems reclaim.
- Condensation and thermal cycling. Repeated warm-up during loading and door openings causes condensation on steel surfaces, accelerating corrosion if finishes and drainage are not specified for the environment.
- Low-temperature steel behaviour. Standard structural steel loses ductility below certain thresholds; uprights and beams must be matched to the design temperature to avoid brittle fracture under dynamic forklift loads.
- Limited maintenance windows. Repairs inside a running freezer require shutdowns or hot-work permits, so the original installation must be right the first time — rework is disproportionately expensive.
Recommended Systems
| System | Why It Fits | Key Parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Drive-In Rack | Eliminates most working aisles; ideal for bulk frozen SKUs with LIFO or drive-through FIFO rotation | Load 500–1,500 kg/pallet · Lane depth 2–10 pallets · Height up to 10 m |
| Mobile Rack | Highest floor-space efficiency — only one moving aisle at a time; 100% access when opened | Load 500–2,000 kg/level · Height up to 10–12 m · Motorized carriages with safety interlocks |
| Shuttle Rack | Battery-powered carts work inside deep lanes while trucks stay at the face; reduces cold exposure for operators | Load 500–1,500 kg/pallet · Lane depth 5–20+ pallets · Speed ~60–90 m/min · FIFO or LIFO |
| Radio Shuttle / 4-Way | Multi-level density without multiple truck aisles; one shuttle fleet serves many lanes across tiers | Load 500–1,500 kg/pallet · 10+ tiers · FIFO or LIFO per lane · WMS/WCS controlled |
| Push-Back Rack | Deep-lane density from a single working aisle; faster pick cycles than drive-in for medium-turnover frozen lines | Load 500–1,500 kg/pallet · Lane depth 2–6 pallets · Height up to 10 m · LIFO per lane |
Specifications are standard configuration ranges for preliminary selection; final values are confirmed by engineered calculation and drawings for each project.
Design Considerations
Cold storage racking demands engineering decisions that go beyond standard ambient-warehouse practice. The primary concern is material suitability: steel grade and impact toughness must be selected for the operating temperature, verified against the lowest expected service condition including defrost cycles. ApexBeam sources mill test certificates traceable per coil batch and can supply Q235D or Q355D for sub-zero applications, with higher grades available on request.
Finish specification matters equally. Powder coating alone may not suffice in high-humidity freezer environments where condensation forms on steel surfaces during door openings and defrost periods. Hot-dip galvanizing or zinc-rich primer plus topcoat systems are common choices; the correct option depends on your operating temperature range, humidity profile and washdown frequency. We specify finishes based on your environmental data rather than applying a default.
Drainage and airflow cannot be an afterthought. Upright base plates, floor anchors and beam connections must allow condensate to drain rather than pool, and rack geometry should not obstruct the facility's designed air circulation pattern. Blocked airflow creates warm spots that compromise product integrity and increase compressor load. Our structural team coordinates rack layout with your refrigeration engineer's airflow model before finalizing column positions.
Seismic and dynamic loads interact differently in cold stores. Thermal contraction of the building envelope transfers additional forces to the rack structure, and forklift impact loads at low temperature require verified connection ductility. Every ApexBeam cold storage project is calculated to EN 15512, FEM 10.2.02 or ANSI/MH16.1 as applicable, with seismic verification to EN 16681 and FEM 10.2.08 where required. Our adjustable pallet racking is independently attested to EN 15512:2020+A1:2022 by UDEM (Cert. M.2023.206.C82720, valid to 13 March 2028).
Installation in active cold rooms requires planning. Bolt torques, anchor curing times and sealant compatibility all shift at low temperatures. Our installation supervision covers these variables, and load-notice signage ships with every delivery so operators know the rated capacity at each level regardless of ambient conditions.
For large-scale cold storage complexes, consider rack-supported buildings where the racking itself carries roof and wall cladding — eliminating a separate steel structure and reducing the total refrigerated envelope.
Delivered Experience
ApexBeam has supplied racking to cold-chain facilities across multiple climate zones. Relevant project references include a 13 m multi-tier semi-automated shuttle system with 6,800+ pallet positions, demonstrating our capability in high-density automated environments directly transferable to cold-store operations. All projects receive installation supervision, load-notice signage and container-load optimization to reduce per-pallet shipping cost. Standard products typically ship 20–30 days after order confirmation. FAQ
What steel grades do you use for freezer racking?
Steel grade and impact toughness are selected for the operating temperature of each project. We commonly supply Q235D and Q355D for sub-zero environments, with mill test certificates traceable per coil batch. Higher-strength options such as Q460C are available when load requirements demand them.
Can mobile racking work in a blast freezer at −30 °C?
Yes — mobile rack systems are used in freezer stores down to −30 °C and below. The carriage drive, rail system and safety devices must be specified for the temperature range; we confirm component ratings against your design temperature before quotation. See our mobile rack page for parameters.
How do you prevent condensation damage on rack steel?
We specify finishes based on your operating temperature, humidity and washdown protocol — options include hot-dip galvanizing and multi-coat paint systems. Base plate detailing and drainage provisions prevent condensate pooling. The right combination depends on your specific environment; share your cold-room spec sheet and we will recommend accordingly.
Do you offer AS/RS racking for automated cold stores?
Yes. AS/RS racking is available with positioning accuracy of ±2–5 mm at full height and system heights up to 24 m delivered. Stacker cranes eliminate operator exposure to the cold environment entirely. Integration with WMS/WCS and conveyor systems is included in our scope.
