Pallet Racking for United States Warehouses

ApexBeam supplies industrial pallet racking to US warehouse operators, distribution centres and systems integrators, designed and verified to ANSI/MH16.1 with seismic analysis to ASCE 7 where your site's Seismic Design Category requires it. All 14 system types are available, produced at audited partner plants under our QC and traceability protocol, with standard products typically shipping 20–30 days after order confirmation.

What US Projects Actually Require

The United States has the most prescriptive regulatory chain of any market we serve, and the difference between a compliant and non-compliant rack installation is usually documentation, not steel.

The code path is specific. IBC Section 2209.1 directs that where ASCE 7 requires it, seismic design of storage racks follows ASCE 7 Section 15.5.3. ANSI/MH16.1 — published by the Rack Manufacturers Institute — provides the design, testing and utilization specification for industrial steel storage racks. The 2023 edition revised the seismic and stability calculation methodology relative to MH16.1-2012, so a calculation prepared under the older methodology may not satisfy a jurisdiction enforcing the current code. We design to the edition your Authority Having Jurisdiction enforces and state it explicitly on the calculation cover sheet.

Special inspection applies to many US installations. Under IBC Section 1705.13.7, steel storage racks and steel cantilevered storage racks 8 feet (2,438 mm) or taller that are assigned to Seismic Design Category D, E or F require special inspection. That inspection reviews the rack structural calculations and verifies installed components against them. Our deliverable package is built for exactly this process: signed and version-controlled structural calculations, engineered drawings with member sizes and connection details, anchor specifications with patterns and torque values, and as-built documentation. If your special inspector requests additional detail, we issue it.

Seismic demand varies enormously by region. Sites on the West Coast, in the Intermountain West, and in parts of the Pacific Northwest fall in higher Seismic Design Categories where rack seismic design governs member sizing and anchorage. Across much of the Midwest and Southeast, seismic demand is low and gravity plus wind loads control instead. We do not apply a national default — send your site address or the SDC from your structural engineer and we calculate to it. For higher-category sites we also address rack-to-building separation, because relative displacement between the rack and the surrounding structure during ground motion is a common failure mode where clearances were not designed in.

Imperial units and North American pallet geometry. Load notices, drawings and calculations are issued in imperial units (feet, inches, pounds) on request, or dual-marked. The 48 × 40 in (1,219 × 1,016 mm) GMA pallet is the dominant footprint, which produces different beam lengths and frame depths than EUR-pallet markets. We size from your actual pallet dimensions and weight per loaded pallet rather than converting a European default.

Specifications are standard configuration ranges for preliminary selection; final values are confirmed by engineered calculation and drawings for each project.

Materials and Finish

Standard grades are Q235B, Q235D, Q355B and Q355D, with Q460C available for high-load applications. Every steel coil carries a mill test certificate traceable to its production batch, confirming chemical composition and mechanical properties; certificates are available for buyer review at any stage and ship with every order.

Finish selection follows the environment rather than a default. Ambient dry distribution centres are well served by powder coating with RAL colour to specification. Unheated or semi-open structures, and sites in coastal or high-humidity regions, warrant hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-rich primer plus topcoat system. For cold storage and freezer applications, steel grade and impact toughness are selected for the operating temperature — we supply Q235D or Q355D for sub-zero service.

Logistics and Import Documentation

Ocean freight from Nanjing reaches West Coast ports including Los Angeles and Long Beach, and East Coast and Gulf ports including Savannah, New York/New Jersey and Houston. Transit time and inland drayage differ materially between coast routings, and port congestion can shift the practical delivery date — we sequence production against your target on-site date and tell you plainly when a routing choice affects it.

Every shipment includes engineered layout drawings, the structural calculation report (signed and version-controlled), installation manual with torque specifications and anchor patterns, rated load notices per rack section, container loading plan optimized for stowage and weight distribution, and mill test certificates. Third-party inspection can be arranged at raw material receipt, in-process, or pre-shipment, with agency access and documentation coordinated by us.

Customs and import documentation is prepared to your broker's requirements, including commercial invoice, packing list with per-container component counts, and material certification.

Delivered Experience

ApexBeam racking systems have been delivered to 19+ countries including the United States. Representative capability references include a 24 m high-precision AS/RS structure achieving ±2–5 mm positioning across all bays with zero crane-rack interface incidents during commissioning, and a 37 m self-supporting rack-clad building (11,600 pallet positions) designed to FEM 10.2.03 with seismic verification to local code requirements. See project cases for technical detail on each.

FAQ

Do your racks meet ANSI MH16.1?

Our racking is designed and verified to ANSI/MH16.1 for US installations, with the edition confirmed against what your Authority Having Jurisdiction enforces. The 2023 edition revised seismic and stability methodology relative to MH16.1-2012. Separately, our adjustable pallet racking is independently attested to EN 15512:2020+A1:2022 by UDEM (Cert. M.2023.206.C82720, valid to 13 March 2028).

Can you support the special inspection process for seismic racks?

Yes. Where IBC §1705.13.7 requires special inspection — racks 8 ft or taller in Seismic Design Category D, E or F — we supply signed structural calculations, engineered drawings showing member sizes and connection details, anchor specifications with patterns and torque values, and as-built documentation. If your inspector requests additional detail we issue it.

How do you handle seismic design for West Coast sites?

We perform localized seismic calculation to ASCE 7 §15.5.3 using your site's Seismic Design Category, and address rack-to-building separation where relative displacement during ground motion is a concern. Send your site address or the SDC from your structural engineer. See our seismic design guide for the methodology.

What information do you need to quote a US project?

Warehouse drawings or dimensions including clear height and column positions, pallet size and weight per loaded pallet, required positions, SKU count, forklift type, and your site's Seismic Design Category or address. We return a layout drawing and load calculation. Standard products typically ship 20–30 days after order confirmation.

Can drawings and load notices be issued in imperial units?

Yes. Load notices, drawings and calculations are issued in imperial units or dual-marked metric/imperial, per your specification and your inspector's preference.
