Pallet Racking for Saudi Arabian Warehouses
ApexBeam supplies industrial pallet racking to Saudi Arabian logistics operators, distribution centres and industrial facilities, engineered to a design basis consistent with GSO EN 15512 and calculated for loads determined under the Saudi Building Code. All 14 system types are available, produced at audited partner plants under our QC and traceability protocol, with standard products typically shipping 20–30 days after order confirmation.
What Saudi Projects Actually Require
Three factors distinguish Gulf warehouse engineering from European or North American practice, and all three affect specification rather than just procurement.
The design basis is European-derived but locally adopted. The Gulf Standardization Organization has adopted the European racking design standard as GSO EN 15512:2022 (Steel static storage systems — Adjustable pallet racking systems — Principles for structural design). Our adjustable pallet racking is independently attested to EN 15512:2020+A1:2022 by UDEM (Cert. M.2023.206.C82720, valid to 13 March 2028). We confirm the applicable edition for your project with your consultant rather than assuming equivalence between editions.
Loads are determined under SBC 301. The Saudi Building Code's SBC 301 sets minimum load requirements for buildings and other structures — dead, live, soil, flood, rain, seismic and wind — including load combinations. Structural steel design follows SBC 306. SBC 301 was developed with ASCE/SEI 7 as its basis, adapted to Saudi construction practice and regulatory requirements. Where your project's consultant specifies loads under SBC 301, we calculate the rack to those values; where they specify directly to a racking standard, we work to that.
Seismic demand varies by region. SBC 301 defines seismic design categories with regional mapping. Demand is not uniform across the Kingdom — sites along the Red Sea coast and in the northwest carry higher seismic demand than much of the central plateau. Because this materially affects member sizing and anchorage, we require your site location or the seismic parameters from your structural engineer before finalizing a design. Where seismic verification is required we work to EN 16681 and FEM 10.2.08 as applicable to the project specification.
Civil Defence and Fire Considerations
Saudi warehouse projects are subject to Civil Defence requirements governing means of egress, fire separation, sprinkler coverage and access routes. These requirements shape rack layout directly, not merely as a downstream approval step:
- Sprinkler coverage determines whether in-rack sprinklers are needed at certain heights, which constrains flue space and beam positions
- Aisle widths must satisfy both truck operating geometry and fire service access requirements — the governing case is not always the forklift
- Egress paths and emergency lighting zones can limit where rack runs may terminate
- Rack-supported buildings require the fire strategy to be resolved jointly with the structural model, since the racking carries the envelope
We coordinate rack geometry against your fire consultant's requirements before issuing final drawings. Where a layout must change to satisfy Civil Defence review, resolving it in the design phase costs nothing; resolving it after steel is fabricated does not.
Finish and Corrosion Selection
This is where Saudi specifications most often need attention, because the default answer depends heavily on which part of the Kingdom the site occupies.
| Environment | Driving Mechanism | Typical Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Inland arid (Riyadh, Qassim) | High ambient temperature, UV exposure, abrasive sand and dust | Powder coating with specified film thickness; attention to coating flexibility under thermal cycling |
| Red Sea coastal (Jeddah, Yanbu) | Chloride-laden marine atmosphere | Hot-dip galvanizing, or zinc-rich primer plus topcoat system |
| Arabian Gulf coastal (Dammam, Jubail, Khobar) | Combined marine chloride and industrial atmosphere | Hot-dip galvanizing preferred; coating system selected with consultant |
| Chilled and frozen distribution | Condensation cycling on steel surfaces | Grade and impact toughness selected for operating temperature — Q235D or Q355D for sub-zero service |
Sand and dust ingress also affects moving components. In shuttle and automated systems, cart wheels, rails and guidance components should be specified with ingress protection appropriate to the environment; in VNA installations, wire or mechanical guidance rails are exposed to dust accumulation that affects truck guidance accuracy over time. We specify accordingly and include maintenance guidance in the documentation package.
High ambient temperature does not significantly reduce structural steel capacity at normal warehouse operating ranges, but it does affect coating cure and film integrity during application, and it increases thermal expansion in long rack runs and in rack-clad structures. Both are addressed in specification and detailing rather than left to site tolerance.
Standard grades across the range are Q235B, Q235D, Q355B and Q355D, with Q460C available for high-load applications. Every coil carries a mill test certificate traceable to its production batch.
Systems Most Often Specified
| System | Why It Fits Gulf Operations | Key Parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Selective Pallet Rack | Standard for distribution and 3PL; 100% direct access suits multi-client and multi-SKU operations | Load per level up to 3,000 kg (UDL) · Frames to 18 m · Beam length 1,500–3,600 mm |
| Drive-In Rack | Bulk beverage, food and date/commodity storage with low SKU counts and high volume per SKU | 500–1,500 kg/pallet · 2–10 pallets deep · Up to 10 m |
| Mobile Rack | Highest floor-area efficiency where air-conditioned volume drives operating cost | 500–2,000 kg/level · 10–12 m · One moving aisle |
| AS/RS Racking | Automated distribution eliminating operator exposure to heat; integrates with WMS/WCS | 500–3,000 kg per unit load · 24 m delivered · ±2–5 mm positioning |
| Rack Supported Building | One integrated structure rather than building plus racks — relevant where envelope and thermal performance are designed together | 500–2,000 kg/position · 37 m delivered |
| Cantilever Rack | Steel pipe, bar stock, profiles and building materials distribution | 200–1,500 kg per arm · 6–12 m |
Specifications are standard configuration ranges for preliminary selection; final values are confirmed by engineered calculation and drawings for each project.
Logistics to Saudi Arabia
Ocean freight reaches Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea and the ports of Dammam and Jubail on the Arabian Gulf. Routing choice affects both transit time and inland haulage to your site, and for sites in the Eastern Province versus the Western Region the difference is material. We produce a container loading plan that optimizes stowage to reduce freight cost per pallet position, and we sequence multi-container shipments so components arrive in erection order.
Documentation travelling with every shipment includes engineered layout drawings, the structural calculation report (signed and version-controlled), installation manual with torque specifications and anchor patterns, rated load notices per rack section, container loading plan, and mill test certificates. Third-party inspection can be arranged at raw material receipt, in-process, or pre-shipment; we coordinate agency access and provide all supporting documentation.
Installation supervision is available and is the most commonly chosen option for Gulf projects, given that anchor torque verification and plumb and level checks under site conditions are difficult to delegate remotely.
Delivered Experience
ApexBeam racking systems have been delivered to 19+ countries across the Middle East — including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman — as well as the Americas, Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe. Representative capability references include a 37 m self-supporting rack-clad building (11,600 pallet positions) designed to FEM 10.2.03 with seismic verification to local code requirements, and a 24 m high-precision AS/RS structure achieving ±2–5 mm positioning. See project cases for technical detail.
FAQ
Do your racks meet Saudi requirements?
Our adjustable pallet racking is independently attested to EN 15512:2020+A1:2022 by UDEM (Cert. M.2023.206.C82720, valid to 13 March 2028). The Gulf Standardization Organization has adopted the European racking design standard as GSO EN 15512:2022. We confirm the applicable edition for your project with your consultant, and calculate to loads specified under SBC 301 where your project requires it.
How do you handle seismic design in Saudi Arabia?
SBC 301 defines seismic design categories with regional mapping, and demand differs between the central plateau and coastal regions including the Red Sea coast and northwest. We require your site location or the seismic parameters from your structural engineer, then perform localized seismic calculation to EN 16681 and FEM 10.2.08 as applicable to your project specification.
What finish do you recommend for Jeddah or Dammam?
Coastal sites with chloride-laden marine atmosphere warrant hot-dip galvanizing, or a zinc-rich primer plus topcoat system — standard powder coating alone is generally insufficient. Inland arid sites such as Riyadh are well served by powder coating with specified film thickness, with attention to coating performance under thermal cycling and abrasive dust. Send your site location and we specify accordingly.
Can you work with our Civil Defence requirements?
Yes. Sprinkler coverage, flue space, aisle widths for fire service access, egress paths and rack-clad envelope fire strategy all shape rack layout. We coordinate geometry against your fire consultant's requirements before issuing final drawings, which is where changes cost nothing rather than after fabrication.
What information do you need to quote a project in Saudi Arabia?
Warehouse drawings or dimensions including clear height and column positions, pallet size and weight per loaded pallet, required positions, SKU count and turnover rules, forklift type, your site location (for seismic and finish selection), and any Civil Defence or consultant requirements you already hold. Standard products typically ship 20–30 days after order confirmation.
